Hardness testing

The hardness of a material has only a limited connection with the strength of the material, even if the material strength has an influence on the hardness testing method, which is based on the indentation depth of different specimens. Although the influence of the material strength can be reduced by using thin films for measurement, it cannot be eliminated completely.

In certain cases, however, the hardness of a material has a convertible relationship with the strength. In such instances the relatively low-cost hardness test can be used in place of the generally much more expensive and time-consuming tensile test. Of practical significance is the ability to convert Brinell or Vickers hardness to the tensile strength of structural steels, as it enables detection of material mix-ups, for example during tests on steel structures.
